Why should I hire Born to Lead K-9 Academy?
Most trainers insist on multiple visits, however, my clients enjoy quick results in 1 session! My methods make them more knowledgeable, more confident and more successful than ever in effectively managing their dog’s behavior. I operate with TWO major goals in mind...to help all dog owners truly understand balance and to be the last dog trainer you'll ever need to hire for any reason!

Why should I train my dog at home?

When dogs are sent away to in-board training kennels or work exclusively with trainers, they learn very quickly that the trainers are in charge. When you go to a training center and work in a group, immediately boundaries are established and the dog knows he isn't the center of attention. Once they get back home, they immediately revert back to their old behavior. This is why in-home training is crucial to the success of your dog’s training.

How old does my dog need to be in order to start training?
I offer owner education courses, behavior modification consultations, house training and obedience training for dogs of any age. It is never too early to establish your rank as pack leader. In fact, you need to start the moment you take your new puppy home.

What does obedience training provide for my dog?

Nothing, unless your dog respects your authority or you have food. Once he respects you, obedience training will give your dog confidence and he will gain purpose. He will learn that he has to work for his food, toys and affection. Obedience training will provide structure and he will learn that he is not the leader.Training gives you something to praise your dog for rather than constantly correcting and scolding the dog. Training re-inforces positive communication and bond.

Why do you think that dog owners need education?

Dog owners often sabotage their dog without knowing it. People apply human psychology and use emotions to control their dogs and this is when the trouble begins. Most people will say they don’t understand why their dog is so bad, and that they give him everything he wants! Owners don’t realize that their behaviors are, in fact, the greatest influence on their dogs. Understanding how to fulfill your dog’s needs will unlock his true personality and give you the relationship you really want.

How much do dog training courses cost?

This is arguably the most popular question, and with good reason. All dogs and their situations are different. It is important that I speak with you to determine yours. Sometimes owners are unaware that certain behaviors are a key factor in diagnosing and recommending a course of action. Because of this, only after a brief phone consultation can I offer a quote based on your situation.

Is my dog too old to train?

Not unless he has a physical condition that will prevent him from performing. Older dogs can learn just as fast as, and in some cases, faster than young dogs. Even the most stubborn, aged dogs can be conditioned to “learn new tricks.”

How long does it take to housetrain a dog?

If my advice is followed, you will have very few “accidents” after I leave. It is important to remember that the owners must follow through with the house training and be consistent. With consistency and patience, most dogs are 100% reliable within 3-4 weeks.

What style of training do you use?

After our initial in-home consultation and evaluation, we can discuss these options. I will explain the benefits of each method and determine which one is best to ensure your dog’s success.

Can you train aggressive dogs?

Yes. There are many different types of aggression and I will need to determine what kind(s) of aggression your dog is displaying. If the dog has a history of attacks where the dog has bitten someone or caused injury, a muzzle will be required.

Do you train dogs with separation anxiety?

Absolutely. Separation anxiety can come from many contributing factors. Usually, the dog simply lacks confidence. This is a treatable and reversible condition.

Can you train sheltered or rescued dogs?

Adopted dogs are the best! These dogs are fantastic companions and even if they have been abused or neglected in the past, we can rehabilitate them.

Do you train protection and/or police dogs?

While having general knowledge in this area, I spend the majority of my time working with dogs and families to create a calm, submissive state of mind suited for family environments.

Do you offer group classes?

No. I firmly believe that group classes do not accomplish enough for owners. Group classes are generally easy money for trainers and while the owners and dogs do learn some things, your time and money could be invested in private training which is tailored to your exact needs. If you want socialization, go to a dog park, it's free.
